From an immigration perspective, what do I need to enter Costa Rica?

Entry to Costa Rica is allowed for tourists from all countries. Contact us for information about specific entry requirements.

What vaccines do I need before entering Costa Rica?

As of July 30, 2007, all travelers from the following countries must be in possession of a yellow fever vaccination certificate before being authorized to enter Costa Rica: Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, República Dominicana, Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Gambia, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Bolivia, Venezuela, Brasil, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Republic of Guyana.

There are no vaccination requirements for countries not listed.

Do I need an international permit to drive in Costa Rica?

No, with a valid driving license from your home country you can drive in Costa Rica for a maximum of 90 days. Note that the minimum age for driving in Costa Rica is 18.

Attention, to rent a vehicle you must be at least 21 years old.


Is tap water drinkable in Costa Rica?

Tap water is drinkable in most parts of the country. However, the use of bottled water is recommended, especially in coastal regions (Tortuguero, South Caribbean, South Pacific). Hoteliers will tell you when the tap water is not drinkable.

What is the currency used in Costa Rica?

The colon is the currency of Costa Rica. US dollars and major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express) are also widely accepted.
When paying in dollars, change is usually given in colones.

Please always carry some cash to pay for tips, tolls, or some small restaurants.

Do I need an electrical adapter?

Yes, the power outlets are 110 V, American type, two-pin standard.
